40-year-old man’s life turned into a nightmare: He burned his finger, fell into a coma; 2 of his legs were amputated

Max Armstrong, 40, living in the USA, didn’t know that a small burn he got while lighting a barbecue while camping would turn his life into a nightmare.

With His Friends While camping on the Kiowa reservation in December 2024, Armstrong burned his thumb and forgot about it, putting a bandage on it. However, the burn allowed strep A bacteria into his body, leading to sepsis.
According to the news in The Sun; A few days later, Armstrong, who felt swelling in his left leg, darkening of his toenails and an unbearable pain, was hospitalized on the sixth day. Doctors diagnosed sepsis and he was put into a coma due to the spread of the infection. Armstrong, who woke up on December 13 after a six-day coma, was overjoyed to see his family and wife Megan at the hospital. However, doctors said that both of his legs had to be amputated because sepsis had spread to his legs.
Both legs were amputated in a three-hour surgery that took place on December 23, 2024. When Armstrong woke up and realized that he had lost his legs, he was both shocked and had difficulty accepting it. Armstrong, who underwent physical therapy for 16 days, had to get used to the wheelchair and rearrange his daily life. He was discharged on January 29, 2025 and began to adapt to his new life. As his story spread, a large support campaign was launched for Max Armstrong. The donation campaign launched by his friends and loved ones raised thousands of dollars. Thanking those who supported, Armstrong said, “The support given to me to walk again and take walks in nature made me very happy. I am grateful to all of you.”
Sepsis, also known as blood infection and blood poisoning, is a life-threatening condition in which an infection in the body spreads throughout the body via the bloodstream and the immune system damages its own cells and tissues. Sepsis is the body’s most extreme response to an infection. When sepsis develops, the infection spreads throughout the body through the bloodstream and causes serious, life-threatening medical problems, especially organ failure.
In cases of sepsis, symptoms such as systolic blood pressure below 100 mmHg, shortness of breath, respiratory rate of 22 beats per minute or more, not being able to urinate for at least 12 hours, fatigue and vomiting are observed.
When sepsis occurs, there is a high level of lactic acid in the blood. Too much lactic acid in the blood causes the cells to not be able to use oxygen properly, and therefore some symptoms are experienced. High fever of 38 degrees and above Shivering or chills Accelerating heartbeat Rapid breathing Shortness of breath Vomiting Inability to urinate Weakness and muscle pain Feeling dizzy and faint Loss of energy Low blood pressure Hypothermia (a very low body temperature) Sweating Feelings of pain and discomfort If you or someone you know is showing signs of sepsis, seek medical help immediately, because every hour counts in sepsis.
