European Union registered fruit attracts great attention: It kills microbes in the body

The harvest of Turkey’s only pomegranate variety registered in the European Union (EU) and claimed to date back to the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Suruç pomegranate, has begun.

The harvest of the Suruç pomegranate, which is the only registered pomegranate variety and among Turkey’s 21 products registered by the European Union (EU), has begun. Produced approximately 300 thousand tons annually, this pomegranate increased in production by 50 percent with the Suruç Plain receiving water in 2015.
The Suruç pomegranate, whose historical origins are claimed to be based on the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, both maintains its quality and is becoming increasingly recognized in international markets thanks to its European Union registration. Sold for 25 Turkish Liras per kilo, these pomegranates are in high demand both at home and abroad, especially in Europe.
Agricultural Engineer Mehmet Tekçe stated that after the Suruç pomegranate was registered, they started to export pomegranates and pomegranate juice to Europe.
Emphasizing that the Suruç pomegranate differs from other pomegranate varieties with its thin peel, large seeds, high acidity and sour taste, Tekçe stated that its high acidity is especially good for diabetics and kills microbes in the body.
Pomegranate producer Müslüm Kaplan drew attention to the historical importance of the Suruç pomegranate and said, “These pomegranates have been grown in Suruç for 200-300 years. We also call them camel’s tooth pomegranates.” Kaplan also stated that the Suruç pomegranate has been grown in the Suruç Plain for thousands of years and does not grow anywhere else.
