The European Union will provide 20 million euros in urgent aid to the regions affected by the flood disaster in Bosnia and Herzegovina. 27 people lost their lives due to floods in the country.
The European Union (EU) announced financial aid for Bosnia and Herzegovina, which was affected by the floods.
EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that 20 million euros of aid will be provided immediately for the regions affected by the floods that occurred in Bosnia and Herzegovina on October 4.
Von der Leyen, who was in Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, as part of her Western Balkan tour, held a press conference with Borjana Kristo, President of the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Expressing that she was very saddened by the floods that caused the death of 27 people in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Von der Leyen said, “We have decided to send 20 million euros of aid immediately, without any delay. The recovery process will also be supported by the EU Solidarity Fund.”
Stating that Bosnia and Herzegovina managed to obtain the status of a candidate country for the EU after a difficult process, Von der Leyen said, “Immediately then the decision was made to start membership negotiations. You still have a long way to go, but I see that Bosnia and Herzegovina is determined in the EU membership process,” she said.
Emphasizing that she will focus more on the EU’s enlargement policy in her new term, Von der Leyen said they also discussed investment issues.
The President of the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kristo, also thanked the EU for the assistance it will provide to the flood region and noted that Bosnia and Herzegovina is aware of its responsibilities in the EU membership process and that they will take steps accordingly.
Hosted by members of the Bosnia and Herzegovina Presidency Denis Becirovic, Zeljko Komsic and Zeljka Cvijanovic as part of her contacts with Bosnia and Herzegovina, Von der Leyen also made examinations in the flood region yesterday. After Albania, North Macedonia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, Von der Leyen will also visit Serbia, Kosovo and Montenegro.
