Over 13,000 artists, including ABBA, The Cure and Radiohead, have published an open letter against AI. The artists warned the industry against the theft of their artworks.
Leading names in the music world, including ABBA, The Cure and Radiohead, have published a joint open letter in order to draw attention to the negative effects of artificial intelligence on creative works. The letter signed by 13,500 artists stated that the unlicensed use of AI threatens the artists’ livelihoods. Artists, including composer Max Richter, writer Kazuo Ishiguro, actors Julianne Moore and Kevin Bacon, have protested the use of AI to train creative works. The letter said, “The unlicensed use of creative works to train AI is unacceptable.”
“ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IMPACT IS EXTREMELY DISTURBING” Featured artist Nick Cave has previously described the impact of AI on music as “extremely disturbing.” Additionally, earlier this year, more than 200 artists, including Stevie Wonder, Billie Eilish and R.E.M., signed a letter submitted by the Artist Rights Alliance expressing similar concerns. The published letter called on AI companies, developers and platforms to use the application without violating the rights of artists and without devaluing them. “When used irresponsibly, AI poses serious threats to our ability to protect our privacy, our identities, our music, and our livelihoods,” they said.
