North Korea’s ‘Storm Corps’ on the battlefield: Generals identified

North Korean troops have been deployed to an active battlefield for the first time since the 1950s. According to claims by countries such as the US, Ukraine and South Korea, thousands of soldiers will fight to repel Ukrainian troops in Russian territory in Kursk. In the meantime, the Ukrainian government has managed to identify North Korean generals on the battlefield. It is claimed that these high-level officials are in the region on behalf of leader Kim Jong-Un. This is a major and almost unprecedented assignment for the North Korean military.

The Ukrainian government has tested the identities of three North Korean generals it claims are accompanying thousands of North Korean soldiers sent to Russia.
Speaking at the United Nations Security Council, the Ukrainian delegation said the three generals were among at least 500 North Korean officers sent to Russia.
According to Ukraine, North Korean troops have arrived in the region in at least five formations, each consisting of 2,000 to 3,000 soldiers, and are planned to be integrated with Russian troops to conceal their presence.
Russia, on the other hand, does not deny the involvement of North Korean troops in the war it has been waging in Ukraine since February 2022.

The North Korean government also defended the idea of deploying troops in accordance with international law after the initial denial.
At the same Security Council meeting, Russian envoy Vassily Nebenzia said Russia’s military interactions with North Korea did not violate international law and that Moscow had the right to seek assistance from its partners.

Ukraine has identified Colonel-General Kim Yong Bok, a senior general who commanded special forces units, including the corps known as the “Storm Corps,” which South Korea’s intelligence agency said was sent to Russia.
This general took part in seven events, including special forces exercises, alongside North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Officials believe the general is in Russia as Kim Jong Un’s representative, saying it is a major and almost unprecedented assignment for the North Korean military.
Other senior officers identified by Ukraine include Colonel General Ri Chang Ho, head of the Reconnaissance General Bureau, and Maj. Gen. Sin Kum Cheol, head of the Main Operations Directorate. Ri, who has been the head of North Korea’s main intelligence agency since 2022, has been sanctioned by South Korea, which claims he oversaw massive cyber-hacking efforts to steal technology and foreign currency.
General Ri has also accompanied leader Kim Jong Un on an unusual number of events this year, including inspecting a naval base.
Sin’s career is unclear, but he is likely to take command of North Korean troops in Russia after Kim Yong Bok and Ri Chang Ho leave.
