It has been reported that a new migrant convoy of approximately 2,500 people has set off from Mexico due to the presidential elections in the US.

According to the Mexican press, thousands of migrants who started walking from Tapachula in the southern Chiapas state of the country want to cross the border before the new US president takes office. Migration monitor Luis Rey Garcia stated to the press that approximately 2,500 migrants set off to reach the US border and that this number could increase. It was recorded that the majority of the migrants were from China, Peru, Ecuador, Venezuela, Colombia, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala and Haiti.Speaking to the Spanish EFE agency, Venezuelan migrant Ehison Diaz pointed out the possibility of US Presidential candidate Donald Trump winning the election and said, “Most of those who left Tapachula set out out of fear that Trump could win. If Trump wins, our dreams of entering the US could be completely over.” Honduran migrant Nelson Mejia also emphasized that they wanted to cross the border before the new president took office in the US and asked Mexican authorities not to stop them. More than 700,000 migrants entered Mexico between January and July, according to the International Rescue Committee (IRC). Many of the migrants are trying to reach the United States from Central American countries via Guatemala and Mexico.
