South Africa’s water crisis: Government’s emergency plan

Water cuts will be implemented in Johannesburg, the largest city and economic heart of the Republic of South Africa, where the water crisis is taking place.

South Africa’s Minister of Water and Sanitation, Pemmy Majodina, announced to the press that planned water cuts will be implemented starting on November 14 due to problems with water supply in Johannesburg. Stating that they aim to reduce water consumption in Johannesburg, Majodina said, “This measure includes, among other things, reducing water supply between 9pm and 4am.” Minister Majodina noted that this practice will be implemented to restore water reserves. Home to a population of around 6 million, Johannesburg is the largest city in South Africa. The city, which is the commercial centre of the country and the region, has been experiencing a water crisis in recent months due to dry season conditions and disruptions in the water supply system.
