The evening before the execution, the provincial governor’s office took to social media to call on officials and the public to “participate in this event.”
Afghanistan’s top court named the executed man as Mohammad Ayaz Asad.
The court said in a statement that he was sentenced to reprisal for shooting another man, Habibullah Saif-ul-Qatal, and that his case was “examined very sensitively and repeatedly.”

Public executions were common during the Taliban’s first term in power, from 1996 to 2001.
Since their return to power in August 2021, fewer executions have been carried out.
There were three public executions in a single week in February.
Two people were executed by being shot in the back in front of a large crowd in eastern Ghazni, and a few days later in the north, A similar execution was carried out in Jowzjan province.
Corporal punishment, especially flogging, is common under Taliban rule and is used for crimes such as theft, adultery and alcohol consumption. The United Nations and rights groups such as Amnesty International have criticized the Taliban government’s use of corporal punishment and the death penalty.
