A regional government spokesman made a statement regarding the fire that broke out in the town of Villafranca del Ebro in the north of the country.
He said the fire started at around 5 a.m. local time in a residence for the elderly called “Jardines de Villafranca” and that it took firefighters several hours to extinguish the blaze.
It was reported that at least 80 people were in the building when the fire broke out, and the fire, which broke out in a “hard to reach” part of the building, has been brought under control. The spokesman could not say whether all the victims were residents of the nursing home.
One person is in critical condition, while several others are receiving treatment for smoke inhalation. The official said fire crews, ambulances and police were at the scene. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
