Hospital fire in India: 10 babies die

Ten babies have died in a fire at a hospital in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

A fire of unknown cause broke out in the neonatal intensive care unit of the Jhansi Medical College Hospital in the city of Jhansi in the Indian state. Health official Sachin Mahor told reporters that there were more than 50 babies in the intensive care unit, 10 of whom had died. Mahor said the other babies had been rescued from the fire. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered that relief and rescue operations be conducted “as if in wartime conditions.” Footage on Indian television showed grieving families crying out for their dead babies. Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak said an investigation would be launched to find the cause of the fire.
