In Thailand, 36-year-old Sararat Rangsiwuthaporn was found guilty of killing his friend with cyanide and sentenced to death.
DEATH TRAP WITH FOOD
In April last year, Sararat attended a Buddhist ritual in the Ratchaburi district, west of Bangkok, with his friend Siriporn Khanwong (32). However, Siriporn fell ill after the ritual and died. An autopsy revealed traces of cyanide in his body. Police determined that Siriporn’s bag, money and phone were missing and detained Sararat.
GAMBLE DEBT MURDERS
It was revealed that Sararat was addicted to gambling and targeted his friends because he could not pay his debts. Police said the suspect gave his victims poisonous “herbal capsules” and killed people who wanted to repay their debts. It was determined that he took 300 thousand baht (approximately 300 thousand TL) from one of the victims and then committed the murder.
It was reported that the suspect targeted 15 people in total, but one victim managed to survive. REACTION FROM FAMILY
Following the court ruling, Siriporn’s mother, Thongpin Kiatchanasiri, said, “Justice has been served. I want to tell my daughter that there is still justice in this world.” However, Sararat’s indifferent attitude and smile during the hearing drew backlash from the victims’ relatives. PUNISHMENT FOR THOSE WHO HELPED THEM TOO
Sararat’s ex-wife, a former police captain and her lawyer were also tried as accomplices. Her ex-wife was sentenced to 16 months in prison, and her lawyer to 2 years in prison. There have also been allegations that Sararat’s ex-wife played a role in some of Sararat’s murders.
13 MORE MURDERS ON THE WAY
Sararat faces a total of 80 charges and will be tried in 13 more murder cases in the coming period. Thailand has been in the news for the increasing number of cyanide poisoning cases in recent years. Sararat’s case has caused a great stir in the country, and the court also ruled that the suspect pay 2 million baht in compensation to Siriporn’s family.
