Merkel states that she initially had a positive impression of Trump, but that she was wrong.
Describing her first meeting with Trump, Merkel said that Trump refused to shake hands with her and that his aim was to humiliate her.
The former prime minister also stated that Trump evaluated everything from a real estate agent’s perspective and admired dictators, and that Trump showed special interest in her in gathering information about her East German past and her relationship with Putin.
Merkel’s book also includes relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin. In particular, she describes how Putin used his fear of dogs to show his power during a meeting in Sochi in 2007. Merkel stated that she has been afraid of dogs since she was bitten by a dog in 1995, and that this fear has become part of Putin’s “power games.”
In the book, Merkel also defended her much-criticized policy of maintaining close relations with Russia and her decision to block Ukraine and Georgia from joining NATO in 2008. He stated that there is no common strategy in NATO to deal with Russia.
Merkel, who has been reclusive and distant from the public since leaving office in 2021, will attend some events to be held in Germany and abroad next week to promote her book.
