Germany and China united: Names of twin baby pandas announced

The names of the baby pandas born as a result of Germany and China’s successful cooperation in protecting endangered species have been announced. Berlin Zoo named the twins Meng Hao, which means “beautiful dreams,” and Meng Tian, ​​which means “sweet dreams.” The cubs’ names are in keeping with Chinese tradition, incorporating elements from their mother’s name, Meng Meng.

Berlin Zoo has announced the names of the baby panda twins: Meng Hao, meaning “beautiful dreams,” and Meng Tian, ​​meaning “sweet dreams.” The twins were born in August. The cubs were lying on their stomachs on a warm blanket and watching with curious eyes when Chinese Ambassador to Germany Deng Hongbo and Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner announced their names.
The cubs were named in accordance with Chinese tradition, incorporating elements from their mother’s name, Meng Meng.

The cubs also correspond to their German nicknames, Leni and Lotti.
Leni pays tribute to Berlin actress Marlene Dietrich, while Lotti refers to Charlottenburg, a district of Berlin.

According to Berlin Zoo director Andreas Knieriem, the pair are the result of a successful collaboration between Germany and China to protect endangered species. Knieriem also thanked the two Chinese growers for their help, seeing it as a symbol of friendship.
“This shows a kind of international friendship. It sends the message that nature can always bring people together, especially when it comes to science and nature,” Knieriem said. Meng Hao’s godfather, Wegner, said the giant pandas were a bond between Germany and China and also an incentive for greater cooperation and communication between the two peoples.
According to the zoo, tourists will be able to see the two cubs living with their mother, Meng Meng, from the end of January 2025. Meng Meng, now 11 years old, arrived in Berlin from China in 2017. She gave birth to the first panda twins in Germany, Meng Xiang and Meng Yuan, in August 2019, and returned to China last year.
