Russian traces in Central Africa: Prigozhin’s statue erected

A monument was erected in the name of Yevgeni Prigozhin, the founder of the Russian mercenary group Wagner, who lost his life last year, in Bangui, the capital of the Central African Republic. According to authorities, Prigozhin’s statue is a symbol of bilateral relations between Russia and the Central African country.

A statue of Yevgeny Prigozhin, founder of the Russian mercenary group Wagner, was erected in the Central African Republic’s capital Bangui.
Prigozhin was sculpted with a walkie-talkie in his hand and a bulletproof vest on him, while his right-hand man, Dmitry Utkin, was sculpted with a Kalashnikov rifle. The opening of the monument was attended by many high-ranking Central African officials. Bangui residents are pleased with the erection of Prigozhin’s statue.
Wagner began operating in the Central African Republic, one of the poorest countries in the world despite its rich underground resources, in 2018.
Before Prigozhin’s death, it was estimated that Wagner had around 2,000 soldiers in the country.
Yevgeny Prigozhin, once known for his closeness to Russian President Vladimir Putin, served in countries in the Middle East and Africa after founding Wagner in 2014.
With the start of the Ukrainian War in 2022, he fought against the Kiev administration on behalf of Russia. However, after a while, relations between Prigozhin and the Kremlin deteriorated. In June 2023, Prigozhin ordered his troops to march on Moscow.
Two months after the failed uprising, Prigozhin and Utkin, along with some of their Wagner soldiers, died in a mysterious plane crash in Russia.
Following his death, the Kremlin quickly took control of Wagner. Wagner’s soldiers were integrated into a formation called the “Africa Corps.”
Prigozhin also has a statue at his grave in St. Petersburg.
