The iconic Eiffel Tower in Paris, France, was evacuated due to an electrical emergency. Authorities said the cause of the short circuit was being investigated and that the tower was expected to be “gradually” opened to visitors later in the day.

The iconic Eiffel Tower in Paris, France, was evacuated out of safety concerns following an electrical emergency. Local media reported that one of the power rails in the tower’s elevators had short-circuited, citing sources at SETE, the tower’s operator.

FIRE ALARM SIGNED A technical problem between the second floor and the top of the tower triggered a fire alarm at 10:50 a.m. (0950GMT). Authorities evacuated the building “in line with safety procedures” and said no visitors were in danger.

GRADUATELY OPEN TO VISITORS The fire department and the tower’s technical maintenance units are investigating the cause of the short-circuit, and the tower is expected to be “gradually” opened to visitors from the second floor later in the day.
