Will ceasefire agreement bring down Israeli government? One party withdraws from coalition, another threatens

Far-right National Security Minister Ben Gvir, who opposed the ceasefire agreement reached in Gaza, resigned. Another far-right figure, the leader of the Religious Zionist Party, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, said he would bring down the government if attacks in Gaza did not resume.

Far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who opposes the ceasefire in Gaza, spoke to the Israeli Army Radio. Smotrich argued that Israel “should occupy Gaza and establish an interim military government because there is no other way to defeat Hamas.” Smotrich, who accused Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi of being “weak in strategy,” said, “If he does not return to fighting in a way that will allow us to capture and govern the entire Gaza Strip, I will bring down the government.”
Smotrich said, “If I were prime minister, I would tell the chief of staff, ‘This is my policy, if you are not going to implement it, go home.'” In a video message released yesterday, Minister Smotrich announced that he was staying in the government after accepting some of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s demands regarding the attacks on Gaza.
Emphasizing that they could not prevent the ceasefire and prisoner swap agreement in Gaza, which he described as “dangerous”, but that they had obtained a decision in both the cabinet and other means that the war in Gaza would not end without achieving its goals, Smotrich added, “We demanded and received a commitment to completely change the method of war.”
The Religious Zionist Party gave a “conditional” green light to a ceasefire and prisoner swap deal in Gaza in a statement on January 16.

While the ceasefire was awaited, Israel’s far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir and two other ministers announced their resignations over the deal.

The Jewish Power party is no longer part of the ruling coalition, but the party said it would not try to overthrow Netanyahu’s government.

Ben Gvir had opposed a deal with Hamas from the start.
