17-year-old beat cancer, died suddenly 1 week later: They took him to the hospital with 2 symptoms

17-year-old Hannah Riddell, who lives in England, won her tough battle with cancer. However, her happiness did not last long; The young girl died a week later of suspected sepsis.

Hannah was diagnosed with stage 4 Hodgkin lymphoma after a mass was noticed under her arm in August 2024. The young girl, who bravely fought her disease, underwent six cycles of chemotherapy. On January 7, doctors said there were no more signs of cancer in her body.
Hannah’s mother, Jill Mitcheson (44), said her daughter had big dreams for the future. “She had so many plans. She wanted a future and they were all taken away from her,” she said, expressing her sadness. Hannah had just finished school and was planning to continue her education. Her boyfriend, Kieron Stokoe, 18, had supported her throughout her illness. They were planning to go on holiday to celebrate her recovery from treatment.
However, during a routine blood test on January 14, Hannah had two seizures and shortly afterwards her heart stopped. Her mother, Jill, described her daughter as looking pale and feeling nauseous before the test. She also said she had severe pain in her legs.
Hannah, who had another seizure, was quickly taken to the emergency room. Jill described the moment in these words: “Her eyes were rolling back, she was in a panic. She was having difficulty breathing.”Hannah died shortly after being taken to intensive care.
The family is awaiting the results of an inquest into what caused Hannah’s sudden death. It is thought that sepsis may have been the cause of her death. Sepsis is the body’s overreaction to an infection, which can lead to tissue damage, organ failure and death.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), one-third of patients diagnosed with sepsis worldwide die. Those who survive struggle with long-term health problems such as chronic pain, fatigue, organ dysfunction and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
