A 25-year dream comes true: The first house on the moon is on its way

Swedish artist Mikael Genberg, who wanted to add an artistic touch to the depths of space, finally made his 25-year dream come true. Today, a tiny house designed to be sent to the Moon set off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida aboard SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket.

The first house planned to be placed on the surface of the Moon set off today. The artist behind the tiny house has been trying to make his dream come true for 25 years.
This miniature structure, called “Moonhouse”, is inspired by classic Swedish houses. The house, which is 12cm long, 8cm wide and 10cm high, represents a poetic idea of adding a red Swedish house with white corners to the lunar surface.
“The idea was crazy and maybe stupid, but also really poetic in my mind,” Genberg said.
Moonhouse will be dropped into the Mare Frigoris region of the Moon by Japan-based ispace’s Resilience rover. The team, led by Swedish engineer Emil Vinterhav, spent two years designing and testing the miniature house to ensure it would withstand the challenges it would face during its journey to the Moon.
Moonhouse is not the first work of art Genberg has carried into space. An earlier model of the project was taken to the International Space Station by Sweden’s first astronaut Christer Fuglesang. But this time, the house will leave a permanent mark on the Moon’s surface, surpassing the Earth.
Resilience is planned to land on the Moon’s surface within 4 months. After the house is released, the rover Tenacious will take photos to capture the artistic project.
Mikael Genberg and his team hope this tiny house will become a major symbol on the Moon.
