“THERE ARE 14 BULLET HOLES IN MY CAR” Making a statement after the incident, Morales said, “There are 14 bullet holes in the car I arrived in.” Morales claimed that two vehicles stopped him on the road and opened fire on his car, with one bullet missing his head. “The elite agents of the Bolivian State tried to end my life today,” Morales said in a post on social media.
“THE GOVERNMENT TRIED TO KILL ME” Morales’ spokesman said the former president would hold a press conference and “present evidence that the government was involved in the assassination attempt against Evo Morales.” Bolivia’s Deputy Security Minister Roberto Rios told reporters that the police had not launched any operations against Morales.
MORALES’ RESIGNATION PROCESS Morales, who served three terms as president, resigned in 2019 after a disputed election plunged the country into turmoil. Former economy minister Luis Arce was elected president the following year. Bolivia is grappling with declining natural gas production, depleting foreign exchange reserves and rising inflation ahead of next year’s elections, increasing pressure on the ruling party and leading to an increasingly complex political climate.
