Beware of 0850 numbers! 5G trap from scammers: “If you don’t buy, your internet will be cut off”

5G technology is expected to be put into service in Turkey next year. A tender has not been held for 5G yet, but scammers have started to victimize citizens using the new technology. Fraudsters who call from 0850 numbers and try to sell modems that they say are 5G-compatible are trying to scare people by lying that if they do not buy the modem, which they are trying to sell for at least 3 thousand liras, the current modem will be disabled.

The latest method of phone fraudsters was the 5G technology, which has not even been put into service yet.
Scammers who call citizens and say that there is 5G infrastructure work in the neighborhood are trying to lure the consumer into a trap with the lie “Your modem is not compatible with 5G technology.” Scammers who intimidate citizens by saying, “If you don’t buy a new modem, your current modem will be disabled,” are trying to sell fictitious modems that they say cost at least 3 thousand liras.
A citizen named Sevilay, who was a victim of the scammers, told Hürriyet that she was forced to sell a new modem for 2,900 TL with this fraudulent method and that she was threatened that her internet would be cut off if she did not buy it.
Another citizen said that she was threatened that her internet speed would decrease significantly if she did not buy the modem in question.
“WITHDRAWAL FEE” LIE
Scammers are also deceiving citizens with the lie of “withdrawal fee.” One of the victims reported that he was told that his contract would be canceled and that he would have to pay a termination fee.
A citizen who believed the scammers and paid 2 thousand liras stated that he realized that he had been scammed when no modem was sent.
Ergün Kılıç, the President of the Consumer Rights Association, warned citizens against scammers.
He drew attention to the fact that scammers can copy numbers due to their capabilities in the field of information technology, and therefore they can call from numbers starting with 444 or 0850.
