Cats understand words they hear: They’re faster than babies!

A new study in Japan has revealed that cats pay attention to human speech and respond faster than babies in understanding words.

A new study has revealed that cats can associate words with images without reward or guidance.
A team of animal scientists from Azabu University in Japan conducted an experiment on 31 house cats to examine how much attention they pay to human speech.
In the study, published in the journal Scientific Reports, the cats were given a test used in studies on babies’ language development.
In the experiment, cats were given a vocabulary test designed for babies. Each cat was shown two short animated cartoons on a laptop screen, and each clip was accompanied by different made-up words.

The cats watched each cartoon up to eight times. The analysis showed that when the “wrong” word was spoken, the cats looked at the screen for a third longer.

The researchers noted that this connection was established faster than in babies, and added, “It is noteworthy that cats made the picture-word match after only a short exposure.” However, they emphasized that it is too early to make a definitive judgment.
The research team stated that they do not yet know whether cats make these connections for a long time and how they will react in an environment where more words are presented.

Future studies are expected to deepen our understanding of cat language development and word associations.
