Ceasefire in Gaza: “Talks are 90% complete”

A senior Palestinian official involved in negotiations with Israel spoke to the British media. The official said that talks for a three-phase captive-ceasefire agreement were 90 percent complete, but key problems remained.

As ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Palestine continue, the sides are providing assessments of the latest situation to the media.

A Palestinian official involved in the negotiations mediated by the US, Egypt and Qatar told the British broadcaster the BBC that talks for a three-phase captive-ceasefire agreement were 90 percent complete, but key problems remained.

The official, who noted that one of the areas of disagreement was the Philadelphi Corridor running along Egypt, said that a buffer zone several kilometers wide along Gaza’s border with Israel was being considered, and that Israel would have a “military presence” in the area.

According to the official, once these issues are resolved, a ceasefire could come into effect within days.

THE DAY AFTER THE WAR IN GAZA The BBC reported that, according to the agreement, 20 Palestinian prisoners would be released for every female prisoner released in the first phase of the ceasefire, but the names of these prisoners have not yet been decided.

It was also reported that around 500 trucks of humanitarian aid would enter Gaza every day.

The BBC claimed that the third phase of the agreement would see the war end and Gaza would be “run by a committee of technocrats who had no previous political connections but would have the support of all Palestinian groups.”
