The source of the magnetic field is molten iron in the Earth’s outer core, which is moved by heat from the planet’s center. The flow of this liquid metal directly affects the position of the magnetic pole. Dr. “It’s not possible to predict these movements with certainty, but with constant monitoring and modeling, we are getting important data,” Brown added.
BGS maps the Earth’s magnetic field using a network of ground stations and satellites. The new World Magnetic Model is scheduled for release in December and will be used to improve the accuracy of technological systems.
