Depressed fish who couldn’t stand loneliness came back to life with cardboard people!

A sunfish living at the Kaikyokan Aquarium in Shimonoseki, Southern Japan, became depressed and refused to eat. The temporary closure of the aquarium for renovations completely changed the fish’s behavior. Staff used an unusual method to bring the fish back to life.

While Japan’s Kaikyokan aquarium, which closed for renovations in December 2024, has created a calm environment for most marine life, for one sunfish it has had the opposite effect. Normally the fish liked to interact with visitors from behind the glass, but after being closed, it remained motionless, leaning on the edge of the water tank, and stopped eating.
Aquarium employees shared the following about the sudden change in the fish’s behavior on their social media accounts: “At first we thought it was a digestive problem, but I think it’s because it’s loneliness. One of our employees said, ‘Could it be that it missed the visitors?’ We didn’t believe it at first, but now that I think about it, it seems right!”
The aquarium staff, who tried different methods to cheer up the fish, found a very creative solution. The staff prepared human figures out of cardboard and placed them next to the tank. This touching solution worked!
The staff, who saw that the fish had returned to normal the next day, shared their joy on social media with the following words: “We put the models in the tank with hope and it miraculously worked! Our fish has regained its old energy.” The sunfish, who apparently missed the attention of visitors, came out of depression thanks to this “new bond” with the cardboard people. Now the aquarium staff is working on alternative solutions to keep the fish happy.
