Did North Korea buy oil from Russia?

The UK-based research organization Open Source Centre announced that North Korea may have bought more than one million barrels of oil from Russia in the first eight months of the year, in violation of United Nations sanctions.

A new claim has come from the UK-based research organization Open Source Centre regarding the increasing cooperation between North Korea and Russia.

A non-profit research organization has announced that North Korea may have purchased more than one million barrels of oil from Russia in an eight-month period of the year, in violation of United Nations (UN) sanctions.

MORE THAN 40 VISITS MADE

The published report stated that North Korean oil tankers have made more than 40 visits to the Vostochny port in the Russian Far East since March.

The report stated that “Dozens of high-resolution satellite images, AIS (Automatic Identification System) data, and images released by maritime patrol missions tasked with monitoring North Korea’s attempts to evade UN sanctions show that North Korean tankers have repeatedly loaded at an oil terminal in the Vostochny port of Russia.”

It was noted that the Russian Foreign Ministry did not respond to requests for comment on the issue.

UN SANCTIONS RESTRICT OIL IMPORTS North Korea has the right to import 500,000 barrels of refined petroleum products per year within the scope of UN Security Council sanctions imposed due to its nuclear weapons and ballistic missile program.

Despite this, it is known that North Korea is trying to evade UN sanctions through various illegal means, especially ship-to-ship transfers on the high seas.
