Education in India given a ‘violence break’

The suspension of education in schools and universities in six districts of the Indian state of Manipur has been extended indefinitely due to the violent incidents and subsequent protests.

Schools and universities in six districts of India have been closed since November 16.

A statement from the Council of Higher Education of India instructed that schools and universities that were closed in the said regions should remain so “until further notice.” Authorities said the curfew, which was previously declared in six districts, has been relaxed from 5 am to 12 noon, adding that sit-ins, rallies and meetings without approval will not be allowed during these hours. Tensions in the region had risen after security forces killed 10 armed militants in a clash that broke out in Jiribam district of Manipur on November 11. Locals protested on November 17 when three children and three women who went missing following the clashes were found dead. Police intervened in the chaos that broke out during the protests, and an indefinite curfew was declared in some areas.
