First in Hong Kong: Dinosaur fossil discovered

It was reported that a dinosaur fossil was discovered for the first time in China’s Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Officials made a statement regarding the dinosaur fossil discovered on Port Island within the UNESCO Global Geopark. The statement stated that the dinosaur fossil found for the first time in Hong Kong belonged to a dinosaur that lived between 66 and 145 million years ago, in the Cretaceous period. It was stated in the statement that more research was needed to determine the type of dinosaur, and that experts were assigned to conduct field work. The government announced that the island was closed to the public until further notice so that the necessary excavations and studies can be carried out. Development Minister Bernadette Linn Hon-ho said the discovery was of great importance and provided new evidence for paleoecology research in Hong Kong. It was noted that the fossil would be exhibited at the history museum in the Tsim Sha Tsui district from October 25.
