From egg to Messi: the extraordinary story behind the Instagram record

One of the most unforgettable moments on social media was when an ordinary egg broke the record by receiving more than 60 million likes on Instagram. The egg, which held the title of most-liked post for a long time, lost its record with a photo of Messi winning the 2022 World Cup final. The owner of the photo behind the surprise success that achieved great success explained that it was a complete “coincidence”.

After Kylie Jenner broke the like record on Instagram with a photo of her holding her newborn daughter Stormi’s thumb in 2018, London advertising executive Chris Godfrey and his friends Alissa Khan-Whelan and CJ Brown decided to break the record with a single post on Instagram in 2019. The decision they made was unusual and interesting. Sharing an egg placed on an ordinary plain white background.
Chris and his friends wrote under the post “Let’s break the world record together and become the most liked post on Instagram. Let’s beat Kylie Jenner’s current record of 18 million! We can do it.” And things went unexpectedly well. The egg photo received 19 million likes, beating Kylie Jenner’s 18 million, and today, it managed to reach a massive 60 million.
However, after the record was broken, a new photo was shared on the same account showing the famous egg cracking. Many people wondered what would come out of the egg; however, it was soon revealed that the egg had “cracked” under the pressure of social media fame and turned into an awareness campaign for Mental Health America. In an ad that aired during the Super Bowl, the egg said, “I am the world record egg (you may have heard of me). I’ve been cracking lately. The pressure of social media is pushing me.” He made statements like this and added: “If you’re having a hard time, talk to someone. We can do this together,” he gave the message and shared the contact information of the mental health organization.
Yumurta’s record changed after the 2022 World Cup Final. Argentine National Team player Lionel Messi’s championship photo took first place with more than 70 million likes. The egg named Eugene maintains its second place.
After all this, Chris shared a third photo after the broken egg. He called for a new record under the image of the egg with the Palestinian flag placed. Like Kylie Jenner, he called people to a new record.
Chris Godfrey stated in an interview with the New York Times that everything is actually a chance. Andrew Essex, CEO and founder of Plan A, emphasized that it was a complete coincidence that the photo of the egg attracted so much attention, and added, “This is not repeatable, it is not sustainable. But this is a chance that attracted the world’s attention.” Godfrey also said that what is important after this attention is important: “What matters is what you do with this attention.”
