American technology company Google announced that it will change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America. However, it was stated that this change will only be visible in America.
In the statement made on Google Maps’ social media account, it was reported that following the change in the American Geographic Names System, the Gulf of Mexico will be replaced by the Gulf of America.
It was stated that the name change will not be reflected in Mexican users. It was reported that countries outside the USA and Mexico will see both names. It was announced that Denali, located in Alaska and the highest mountain in North America, will also be changed to Mount McKinley.
STATUS STATEMENT ON THE GULF OF MEXICO
The statement made by the US Department of the Interior said, “Upon the President’s instruction, the Gulf of Mexico will now officially be known as the Gulf of America. The highest peak in North America (Mount Denali in Alaska) will once again carry the name Mount McKinley.” The statement, emphasizing that these changes were made in order to protect the extraordinary heritage of the USA and pass it on to future generations, said, “The Board on Geographic Names, affiliated with the US Department of the Interior, is working quickly to update the official federal naming to reflect these changes. The changes will be effective immediately for federal use.” MOUNT MCKINLEY North America’s highest peak, Mount McKinley in Alaska, was named after William McKinley, the 25th President of the United States who was assassinated in 1917. However, the Barack Obama administration changed the name of Mount McKinley to “Mount Denali” in 2015. GULF OF MEXICO Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated at a press conference on Tuesday that Trump could give the gulf whatever name he wanted in the US, but that the gulf would continue to be known as the “Gulf of Mexico” in Mexico and the rest of the world.

Regarding US President Donald Trump’s words, “We will soon change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America,” Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said, “They call this region the Gulf of America, for us it is still the Gulf of Mexico and for the entire world it is the same.”
