Germany’s ruling Social Democrats (SPD) have gathered for a party conference.
The SPD has officially nominated Chancellor Olaf Scholz for the upcoming early elections.
Scholz has thus been given a chance for a second term.
The Social Democrats, the Greens and the Conservatives had proposed February 23 as the new election date.
NE WAS IT?
The ruling coalition in Germany, Europe’s largest economy, collapsed on November 6 after Chancellor Olaf Scholz dismissed his finance minister. Scholz dismissed Free Democratic Party (FDP) Leader and Finance Minister Christian Lindner, who had proposed early elections.
Following this, the FDP decided to withdraw all of its ministers from the government and effectively leave the coalition. Prime Minister Scholz announced that he would request a vote of confidence from the Parliament on January 15. If he cannot receive the necessary votes here, the country will go to early elections. The coalition, known as the “traffic lights”, has been governing the country since 2021.
