In the 4th round of voting in the Greek Parliament, the new president has been determined as Konstantinos Tasulas.
The fourth round of voting was held in the Greek Parliament to determine the name of the person who will replace President Katerina Sakelaropolu, whose term expires in March. The voting was contested by Kostantinos Tasulas from the ruling New Democracy party, Tasos Yanichis from the main opposition Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK), Luka Kacheli from the Radical Left Alliance (SYRIZA) and Kostas Kiryaku from the Victory Party, with 276 deputies from the 300-seat parliament participating. Tasulas came in first with 160 votes, followed by Yanichis with 34, Kacheli with 29 and Kiryaku with 14 votes. The number of abstainers was 39. Tasulas, who passed the 151 required votes for the fourth round, has now qualified to become the new president of Greece. Tasulas will be sworn into office in parliament on March 13, when Sakerapulu’s term ends. The election went to a fourth round as no candidate received the required number of votes in the first three rounds of voting in parliament. Tasulas, who was elected speaker of parliament three times before running for president, was the speaker of parliament elected with the highest parliamentary support to date. Tasulas was forced to resign after being nominated as a presidential candidate by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
