He thought he was depressed for years: 7-centimeter tumor found in his brain

Richard West, 64, started taking medication after suffering from anxiety disorder that started in 2021 and gradually dragged him into depression. Doctors initially thought that West was suffering from ‘quarantine depression’, which is quite common during the coronavirus period, but scans revealed that the unfortunate man had a 7-centimeter tumor in the left frontal lobe of his brain.

West, who went to the doctor complaining of psychological depression during the widespread coronavirus restrictions, realized that the medications he was taking were not working. After various tests were performed, it was stated that the 64-year-old man had a brain tumor and that his depression could be caused by the tumor. It was stated that the non-cancerous tumor started in the meninges, the protective membranes of the brain, and could be fatal if left untreated. Richard West, a retired lecturer, underwent surgery to remove a tumor diagnosed as a meningioma.
The unfortunate man, who had previously battled prostate cancer, was shocked to learn that he had a tumor in his brain. West, who described the painful process he went through, said, ”When Covid-19 restrictions were lifted in 2021, everyone returned to their normal lives, but I was not well at all. I had become forgetful, anxious and depressed. When I learned that I had a tumor in my brain, all I could think about was how long I had left to live, but my symptoms eased after my surgery. My muscle pain is gone, I can walk and run again.” But West, who had a stroke in January 2024, learned that his tumor had grown back. The 64-year-old received radiation therapy for six weeks and is now being followed with regular scans.
According to the Brain Tumor Foundation, meningiomas make up 27 percent of brain tumors and can be life-threatening if left untreated. These types of tumors can start anywhere in the brain and spinal cord, and symptoms can vary depending on where the tumor is located. Symptoms such as headache, visual disturbances, hearing loss, seizures and weakness may occur.
Also touching on the changes that a brain tumor has caused on his personality, West explained that he has an anxiety disorder and feels mentally exhausted. Scientists emphasize that a brain tumor can also reveal itself through depression, anxiety disorders and panic attacks.
