At least 26 people, including 14 soldiers, were killed and more than 40 people were injured in an explosion at a train station in Quetta, in southwestern Pakistan. Witnesses told Reuters they saw people running in chaos after the explosion, and injured people with their legs and arms torn off.
“The target was army personnel from the Infantry School,” Balochistan Inspector General of Police Mouzzam Jah Ansari said of the blast at the usually busy early-morning railway station, adding that most of the injured were in critical condition.
“So far, 44 injured civilians have been brought to the hospital,” hospital spokesman Dr. Wasim Baig told Reuters.
The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), a separatist militant group, claimed responsibility for the attack claimed responsibility.
Police operations senior inspector Muhammad Baloch said the blast appeared to be a suicide bombing and that investigations were ongoing for more information.
“The blast occurred inside the railway station when the express was about to depart for its destination in Peshawar,” Baloch said.
Pakistan is grappling with a surge in attacks by ethnic separatist militants in its southern Balochistan province and by Islamist militants in its northwestern province.
The BLA is seeking independence for Balochistan province, a region of about 15 million people that borders Afghanistan to the north and Iran to the west. The group is the largest of several ethnic rebel groups fighting the government, which they say is unfairly exploiting the province’s rich gas and mineral resources.
At least 73 people were killed in August when separatist militants attacked police stations, railway lines and highways in Balochistan province. The attacks in August were the most widespread in recent years by militants who have waged a decades-long rebellion to secure secession from the resource-rich southwestern province, which is home to major Chinese-led projects such as a port and gold and copper mines.
