Iran also attacks female protester’s mental health: ‘A troubled individual’

A female student in Iran, who was harassed by the university’s morality police for “wearing her headscarf inappropriately,” turned her body into a protest. The student, who stripped down to her underwear, was detained after the protest. Amnesty International wrote that the student was ill-treated while being detained. In a statement on the issue, the Iranian government claimed that the young woman was a “problematic individual” who was receiving treatment. Human rights advocates have drawn attention to Iranian authorities’ habit of labeling female protesters as mentally ill and sending them to psychiatric facilities.

A female student’s dress code protest at the Azad Scientific Research University in Tehran, Iran, has become a global issue. In footage shared on social media, the woman is seen walking on campus in her underwear as police officers forcibly detain her.
A government spokesman said the female student did not pose a security issue but was a “problematic individual” receiving treatment. In its first official response, the Iranian government said, “Instead of looking at this issue through a security lens, we are looking at it through a social lens and trying to solve the problems of this student as a problematic individual.” he said.
It was reported that the young woman, whose name was claimed to be Ahoo Daryaei on social media, was transferred from the police station to a treatment center, but it was not disclosed what type of treatment she will receive.
The statement published on the government’s website said: “It is too early to talk about this student returning to university. He needs treatment and this needs to be completed before taking the next steps.” statements were included.
The university spokesperson also made a statement on the X social media account, saying, “It was determined that the student was under severe mental pressure and had a mental disorder.” Human rights advocates have drawn attention to Iranian authorities’ habit of labeling female protesters as mentally ill and sending them to psychiatric facilities.
More Iranian women are defying authorities by removing their veils following nationwide protests following the death of a young Iranian woman, Mahsa Amini, in September 2022. Amini died while in the custody of morality police for allegedly violating headscarf rules. Security forces used force to suppress the riot.
Amnesty International said in a statement on X that the young woman was “violently arrested after she removed her clothes to protest the mandatory hijab” and called for her immediate release.
On Monday, the semi-official, hard-line Tasnim news agency said the outcry on social media was “the same anti-Iran movement that emerged in 2022 in the Mahsa Amini incident”.
