Los Angeles fires water crisis | Closed for repairs: Here’s the empty reservoir that sparked controversy

While the devastating fires continue in Los Angeles, discussions about “insufficient water” in the reservoirs expected to be used in interventions remain on the agenda. Anadolu Agency viewed those reservoirs.

Water reservoirs that were supposed to be used in the ongoing forest fire extinguishing efforts in and around Los Angeles, California, USA, were closed for repairs.

The closure of the Santa Ynez Reservoir, which has a capacity of approximately 117 million gallons of water and is critical to the city’s water infrastructure when the forest fires started, increased the difficulties experienced in fighting the fire.
While water resources in the region are of great importance for firefighting efforts, the empty reservoirs drawn by AA have revealed the water shortage that has been discussed in recent days.

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) announced that all three 1 million gallon water tanks in the Pacific Palisades region, which was most affected by the fires, were emptied in a very short time.
In Los Angeles, where forest fires frequently break out especially during hot and dry seasons, the revelation that Mayor Karen Bass cut the fire department’s budget by $17.6 million in July 2024 was another important criticism that deepened the problems with water resources.
However, neither the LADWP nor California Governor Gavin Newsom’s statements that water is sufficient to fight the fire have been able to prevent criticism.
The inadequacy of the city’s water resources against the fires has been criticized by locals, many celebrities and social media users. It is stated that authorities have ignored warnings for years and have not taken enough precautions against this problem in Los Angeles, which frequently fights wildfires.
At the same time, Newsom and Bass were accused of “preparing the ground for one of the city’s worst disasters.”
It was stated that the fact that the reservoir has been closed for about a year and the pressure in the fire hydrants is not strong also jeopardizes public safety, and it was argued that Los Angeles should create a better management and preparation process against fires. Some Hollywood celebrities who were harmed in the fire are also criticizing the state and city governments for their failure to combat the ongoing fires.
Actor Mel Gibson, who lost his home in the fire, said, “I can come up with all kinds of scary theories, conspiracy theories and more in my mind, but it seems a bit more appropriate to just say that there was a lack of water, wind conditions and people who were ready, willing and able to start the fire.” “But you start to wonder if they have a purpose in mind. What could it be? What do they want? Is it an empty state? I don’t know,” Gibson said.
The fires, which started on the evening of January 7 and spread rapidly due to high winds in different parts of Los Angeles, have burned more than 37,000 acres so far.

More than 12,000 structures have been damaged or rendered unusable.
Evacuation orders have been issued for approximately 150,000 people, and 24 people have died in the fires.
