Missing on duty: World War II submarine found after 81 years

The British submarine “HMS Troop”, which went missing during World War II and was never found again, was discovered off the coast of Greece after 81 years. The submarine, which went missing on October 14, 1943, is thought to have sunk after hitting an underwater mine.

The location of the HMS Trooper submarine, which went missing during World War II, has finally been identified after years of research. Researchers have carried out at least 14 expeditions to find the submarine since 2000. Now the British submarine has been found at a depth of 830 metres in the Ikarian Sea, near the Greek island of Donoussa.
The wreckage of the Trooper, which went missing on 14 October 1943, was presumed to have sunk after hitting an underwater mine, killing all 64 of its crew. Kostas Thoctarides, owner of underwater rescue company Planet Blue, suggested that the scenario of the ship’s last sighting may be wrong and that the submarine may be further west than thought.
Thoctarides and his team explored a new area using the ship’s sonar system and detected a large mass in the Aegean Sea near the island of Donoussa. Following an examination with the remotely operated vehicle (ROV) “Super Achille”, the Trooper’s location was confirmed on October 3. However, the harsh weather conditions of the Ikarian Sea made rescue efforts difficult.
Visual analysis suggests that the submarine encountered one of the German mines. The explosion broke the Trooper into three pieces, the longest section measuring approximately 106 feet. A hatch in the conning tower was open, suggesting the ship sank while on the surface.
Lieutenant Richard Wraith, Royal Navy, congratulated the Planet Blue crew and said he hoped families of those missing could use the Trooper’s precise location as a focal point to remember their loved ones. Wraith’s father, Lieutenant John Wraith, was the commander of the Trooper’s final mission.
