According to the Bangkok Post, Myanmar has been on the agenda with internal conflicts and acts of violence since 2021, when the army overthrew the elected civilian government and violently suppressed pro-democracy protests, sparking a nationwide armed rebellion. The military government plans to hold elections in 2025 as part of the normalization steps.
A census was conducted ahead of the elections in Myanmar, where conflict and tension continue. The 2024 census revealed that the country’s population had declined from 51.5 million 10 years ago to 51.3 million. The population data is expected to be used in the creation of voter lists in the 2025 elections.
On the other hand, it is stated that the Rohingya Muslims in the country are not included in the 2024 census, as in previous years.

“I strive to successfully organize free and fair elections, which is the ultimate goal of the State Administrative Council,” military leader General Min Aung Hlaing said in his New Year’s speech. he said.

The Myanmar army seized power on February 1, 2021, following allegations of fraud in the 2020 general election and political tension in the country. The army detained many officials and ruling party executives, especially the country’s de facto leader and Foreign Minister Aung San Suu Kyi, and declared a state of emergency for 1 year.
The “Three Brothers Alliance”, which includes armed groups from the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army, the Buddhist Arakan Army and the Ta’ang National Liberation Army, has launched armed actions against the Myanmar army. In a statement made on September 17, 2024, Liz Throssell, spokesperson for the United Nations Human Rights Office, reported that at least 5,350 civilians have been killed and more than 3.3 million people have been displaced since the military coup in Myanmar in 2021.
