NASA satellites revealed! The world is running out of fresh water

NASA satellites have revealed that Earth is heading towards a new fresh water shortage. Scientists from an international research team reported that fresh water reserves have dropped to a critical level in recent years. According to reports, fresh water resources are depleting with rising temperatures and precipitation is unable to replenish the reserves. According to the United Nations’ water stress report published in 2024, the decrease in the amount of usable water creates pressure on farmers and societies.

An international team of scientists examining data from NASA satellites found evidence that the total amount of fresh water on Earth dropped suddenly in May 2014 and has remained low since then.
This shift suggests that the Earth’s continents are entering a continuously drier period, according to research published in Surveys in Geophysics.
Satellite measurements from 2015 to 2023 show that the average amount of freshwater stored in the world, including lakes, rivers and groundwater, is less than what was measured between 2002 and 2014.
The research team identified this sudden, global decline in freshwater using observations from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellites operated by the German Aerospace Center, the German Research Center for Geosciences and NASA. GRACE satellites measure fluctuations in Earth’s gravity on a monthly scale, revealing changes in the mass of water above and below the surface.
During times of drought, farms and cities are increasingly relying on groundwater as irrigated agriculture becomes more widespread. This can lead to a cycle of depletion of groundwater resources: freshwater resources are depleted and rainfall fails to replenish reserves.
According to the United Nations’ 2024 water stress report, the decrease in the amount of usable water is putting pressure on farmers and communities.
It can lead to famine, conflict, poverty and an increased risk of disease as people turn to polluted water sources.
It is not yet clear whether global freshwater will return to pre-2015 values, remain stable or continue to decline.

Noting that the nine hottest years in the modern temperature record coincided with a sudden drop in freshwater, scientists commented, “We do not think this is a coincidence and may be a sign of things to come.”
