New virus alert in the world: What is HMPV, what are its symptoms? Has HMPV been seen in Turkey?

The HMPV virus, which spread in China, has caused concern worldwide. HMPV, which is short for Human metapneumovirus, manifests itself with flu or cold-like symptoms. So, what is HMPV, what are its symptoms? Has HMPV been seen in Turkey?

Chinese media reported that the viral infection known as human metapneumovirus (HMPV), which has been spreading among children, has shown a serious increase in the last days of 2024. This situation has created concern especially among parents and healthcare professionals, while claims on social media that HMPV cases are spreading rapidly have also gained momentum.
Shares of hospitals being overflowing have further increased panic among the public. Videos and photos circulating on social media platforms reveal the burden on the healthcare system. The congestion in hospitals, combined with images of children waiting in emergency rooms, has led to further speculation about the extent of the outbreak.
HMPV, which most people catch when they are still children and more than once throughout their lives, is considered one of many pathogens that cause respiratory illnesses.
HMPV, which causes symptoms such as cough, fever, nasal congestion and wheezing similar to seasonal flu and Covid-19, is mild in most cases, but can cause serious complications such as bronchitis or pneumonia in infants, the elderly and people with weak immune systems.
The virus is transmitted through droplets spread during coughing or sneezing, or by contact with sick people or surfaces that have the virus.
Although there is no specific antiviral treatment or vaccine for HMPV, scientific studies continue to prevent the spread of the disease.
Ministry of Health Coronavirus Scientific Committee Member, Chest Diseases Specialist Prof. Dr. Tevfik Özlü answered the question “Is there HMPV in Turkey?”
Regarding the cases of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) that have been seen in China in recent days and cause respiratory tract infections, Chest Diseases Specialist Prof. Dr. Tevfik Özlü said, “In Turkey, the Ministry of Health is also screening for this virus within the screening system, and regular samples are being taken from every region.
