In the Southeast Asian country of Laos, two Danish citizens, one American, one British and two Australians lost their lives after being taken to hospital. Laos tourism police detained the Vietnamese manager of the hostel where the tourists were staying. The deaths are said to be due to suspected methanol poisoning.

The number of deaths due to suspected methanol poisoning in the landlocked Southeast Asian country of Laos has risen to six.

Two Danish citizens, one American, one British and two Australians died after being taken to hospital following a night spent in the popular backpacker spot of Vang Vieng.
The men were among more than 10 foreigners who fell ill and were taken to hospital last week.

The Lao government said in a statement today that it was “deeply saddened” by the deaths of foreign tourists in Wang Vieng. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs extended its “sincere sympathy and deepest condolences to the families of the deceased” and said an investigation was ongoing.
Laos tourism police told the AFP news agency that the Vietnamese manager of the Nana Backpackers Hostel, where tourists were staying, had been detained for questioning.
Holly Bowles, a 19-year-old Australian woman, died in a Bangkok hospital yesterday surrounded by her family. Bowles was the last person to die in the incident.
The Canberra government is pressuring Lao authorities to conduct a full and transparent investigation into what happened.
Wang Vieng has become a popular backpacker destination in Southeast Asia since Laos’ rulers opened the country to tourism decades ago.
Alcohol tainted with methanol, a toxic alcohol often used in industrial and household products such as antifreeze, is suspected to have caused the deaths. Methanol can be added to drinks to enhance their potency, but it can also cause blindness, liver damage and death.
