Oil refinery explodes in Italy, killing 5

An explosion occurred yesterday at an oil refinery belonging to the energy company ENI near Florence, Italy. It was reported that the death toll rose to 5 with the discovery of the bodies of 3 more people who went missing in the explosion.

According to the news by the Italian ANSA agency, the number of people who lost their lives in the violent explosion that took place yesterday morning at the ENI refinery in the town of Calenzano near Florence has increased. In the search and rescue efforts that continued following the explosion, the bodies of the 3 people who went missing were found. Thus, the number of people who lost their lives in the incident has increased to 5, with the 2 deaths announced yesterday. The number of people injured in the explosion was announced as 26. Eugenio Giani, the President of the Tuscany Regional Government, to which the town of Calenzano is affiliated, announced in a statement that 14 of those injured in the explosion were receiving treatment in hospital, and that two of them were in serious condition.

A DECLARATION OF MOURNING Giani stated that a declaration of mourning was made in the region tomorrow in memory of those who died in the disaster. In the meantime, the Prato Public Prosecutor’s Office has also conducted examinations at the refinery to determine how the explosion occurred as part of the investigation it has launched into the incident. According to eyewitness accounts in the press, the explosion may have occurred as a result of a spark coming into contact with a leak near the fuel tanks. It was reported in the press that employees at ENI’s other refineries decided to go on strike today due to yesterday’s incident.
