A plane carrying 21 passengers and crew has killed 20 people when it crashed in Unity state of South Sudan.

The plane crashed near oil fields at around 10:30 a.m. local time shortly after takeoff for the capital Juba. Authorities said, “The plane crashed 500 meters from the airport. There were 21 people on board. Only one person has survived so far.” Announcing that an investigation would be launched, the Minister of Information said, “The state government is deeply saddened by this accident.”

South Sudan, a young country that gained independence in 2011 and is in the grip of a chronic economic and political crisis, has no reliable transportation infrastructure.

Aircraft crashes are often blamed on overloading and bad weather conditions.
