Polish AI backlash: Radio robot used to fire employees

A radio channel in Poland has sparked backlash after continuing broadcasting with a server created by artificial intelligence after laying off its journalists.

A radio station in Poland has sparked controversy after using an artificial intelligence-created server. After laying off its journalists weeks ago, the radio channel “OFF Radio Krakow” in Krakow, Poland, returned to broadcasting with an artificial intelligence project. In a statement made by the radio channel, it was announced that broadcasting will continue with AI-created presenters and that “the experiment where AI-created characters are journalists will seek an answer to the question of whether this technology is a threat or an opportunity for radio, media and journalism.” Mateusz Demski, who previously hosted the “OFF Radio Krakow” channel, started a petition in response to the project. In his statement, Demski stated that the use of AI-created presenters on the channel “will lead to machines replacing experienced employees in the media sector.” More than 15,000 people have already signed the petition. Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Affairs Krzysztof Gawkowski said in a statement on the X social media account, “Although I am a fan of AI development, some boundaries are being exceeded more and more. AI should be used for people, not against them.” The owner of the radio channel, Marcin Pulit, stated in a statement that the journalists were fired not because of the AI project, but because the number of listeners was “close to zero.”
