The 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations (UN) Framework Convention on Climate Change has begun in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan.
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan also went to Baku to attend the COP29 World Leaders Climate Summit. Before the summit, the leaders took a family photo.
The summit was opened by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres took the podium after Aliyev and said, “We are in the final countdown to limit the global temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius.”
Stating that doubling fossil fuels was ridiculous, Guterres said the G20 should lead climate action.
Guterres said, “COP29 should tear down the walls against climate finance. Developing countries should not leave Baku empty-handed. The world should pay for climate finance, or humanity will pay the price.”
