An agreement was reached on the Common Turkish Alphabet project at the joint alphabet commission meeting held by the Turkish academy and the Turkish Language Association in Baku last September.
Speaking at the 11th Summit of the Council of Heads of State of the Organization of Turkic States (TDT) in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, President Erdoğan made statements about the Common Turkic Alphabet project. Erdoğan said, “The common alphabet is also a symbol of our common future and taking a step into the future. On this occasion, the common alphabet work, especially under the coordination of the White Beards, with the aim of developing the common language was completed in September 2024. An agreement was reached on a 34-letter alphabet. Members must complete the necessary transformation with this alphabet.” he said.
With the studies that first started in 1991, it was planned for the Turkic countries to use a common alphabet and it was recommended that 5 new characters be added to the Turkish alphabet consisting of 29 letters. With the Common Turkic Alphabet adopted in Baku in recent months, it is planned to add the letters Q, X, W, N and Ä to the existing alphabet.
A call is being made to the relevant institutions for the implementation and support of the Common Turkic Alphabet decision, which is a historical decision that promotes mutual understanding and cooperation among Turkic peoples and protects their linguistic heritage, while the alphabet is expected to come into use in 2026.
The countries that will use the common alphabet include Turkey, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tatarstan, TRNC and Uzbekistan.
