Prison riot: 1,534 people escaped, 33 people died

A total of 1,534 prisoners escaped in a prison riot in the Southeast African country of Mozambique, and at least 33 people lost their lives and 15 were injured in clashes around the prison.

The streets of Mozambique continue to be unsettled following the controversial presidential election won by Daniel Chapo, the candidate of the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (FRELIMO).
A riot broke out in a prison during the protests in the capital Maputo.
Police Chief Bernardino Rafael said in a statement that the riot was triggered by anti-government protests outside the prison.
Rafael said that 1,534 prisoners had escaped, and that 33 people had died and 15 people had been injured in clashes with guards outside the prison.
It was later reported that 150 prisoners were caught.
Rafel, who said that there were escape attempts in two more prisons, said, “We are worried as Mozambicans and security forces. We expect an increase in the crime rate in the next 48 hours.” It was learned that the prisoners neutralized the guards, seized their AK-47 rifles and managed to escape from the prison.
Daniel Chapo, who is in power, won the presidential election held in Mozambique on October 9.
Chapo came first with 65 percent of the votes, while his opponent Mondlane received 24 percent of the votes. Since the election was held, Mondlane’s supporters have been protesting the results, claiming fraud.
The violence on Monday and Tuesday left 21 people dead, bringing the death toll to 151 since October 21.
