Qatar’s statement on Syria: “Assad did not make an effort”

Making a statement regarding the situation in Syria, Qatari Prime Minister al-Thani said that Assad has not made any serious efforts to reconcile with his own people.

Clashes continue between Bashar al-Assad’s forces and armed opposition groups in Syria.

Qatar Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani said that the situation in Syria was expected due to the Gaza conflict. Al-Thani said, “Assad has not made any serious efforts to reconcile with his own people.” The Prime Minister expressed concern that if a political solution is not found, the civil war will threaten Syria’s territorial integrity.

He also stated that Qatar felt a new momentum in the Gaza ceasefire negotiations. “We received encouragement from the Trump administration to establish a ceasefire in Gaza before I took office,” he said. Stating that the momentum for a ceasefire in Gaza had returned after the US elections won by Donald Trump, al-Thani said, “Qatar is in communication with the incoming Trump administration regarding the ceasefire negotiations in Gaza.”
