Rapid rise in X’s rival Bluesky: Did the elections hurt Elon Musk?

X, formerly known as Bluesky, which emerged as a rival to Twitter, announced that the number of users had rapidly increased after the US elections, reaching 15 million. It was claimed that many users switched to the Bluesky platform after X owner Elon Musk’s support for Donald Trump, who was elected president in the US. In addition, the British press The Guardian announced that it would no longer share posts on X, citing “far-right conspiracy theories and racism.”

Social media site Bluesky has gained 1 million new users in the week since the US election, while some X users are looking for an alternative platform to publish their thoughts and interact with others online.

Bluesky said in a statement that the total number of users had increased from approximately 13 million at the end of October to 15 million.

INVITATION-ONLY UNTIL FEBRUARY

Founded and supported by former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, Bluesky was an invitation-only platform until it went public in February of this year.

This invitation period gave the site time to develop moderation tools and other features.

Bluesky made a post referring to its competitive relationship with X, with President-elect Donald Trump and Musk, who are monitoring the voting results, on X.

Bluesky, “I can guarantee that no Bluesky team member will sit down with a presidential candidate tonight and give them direct access to control what you see online,” he said.

NEWS SITE STOPS POSTING

On Wednesday, The Guardian announced that it would no longer post on X, citing “far-right conspiracy theories and racism” on the site.
