Rare visitor to the sky: Tonight to be seen for the first time in 160 thousand years!

A rare natural event will occur in the sky on January 13, 2025. The comet, called C/2024 G3 (ATLAS), will both reach perihelion, its closest position to the Sun, and pass at its closest distance to the Earth. This historic pass offers an unforgettable opportunity for sky enthusiasts. The comet will be observable in many countries, including Turkey.

The comet, called C/2024 G3 (ATLAS), will both reach perihelion, which is its closest position to the Sun, and pass at its closest distance to the Earth on January 13, 2025.
Comet C/2024 G3 was discovered by a telescope in Chile on April 5, 2024. It was understood that the comet came from the Oort Cloud in the outer regions of the Solar System and had previously approached the Sun.
Comets are pieces of rock and ice left over from the early periods of the Solar System. As they approach the Sun, they heat up and form a glowing coma and a tail that extends for millions of kilometers.
On January 2, 2025, the comet experienced an outburst of brightness and reached a level that could be seen with the naked eye. On January 13, it will be 13 million 991 thousand 200 kilometers from the Sun and 140 million 173 thousand kilometers from Earth. According to some estimates, the comet’s brightness could reach up to magnitude -4, creating a unique image in the sky.
The comet can be observed on the western horizon, especially in the Southern Hemisphere, just after sunset.

In the Northern Hemisphere, viewing conditions will be more difficult. Turkey is among the countries where the comet can be observed. However, light pollution and weather conditions will be decisive factors for observation.

By the end of January, conditions for observation in the Southern Hemisphere will improve even further. Don’t miss this historic event; because the next passage of Comet C/2024 G3 could be thousands of years away!
