Scientists explained: This habit significantly reduces the risk of dementia! Doing it twice a week is enough

Dementia, which refers to the deterioration of a person’s cognitive functions such as thinking, memory, learning, language use and problem solving, usually occurs in advanced ages and is a disease that is difficult to treat. Australian scientists have announced four basic factors that need to be acquired to prevent dementia, which has been increasing all over the world in recent years.

According to a new study conducted by the University of Queensland, there are four basic ways to protect against dementia. These are; adequate protein intake, regular exercise, treatment of chronic health problems and strong social ties. These elements reduce the risk of cognitive diseases in older individuals.
According to four separate studies examining 30,000 people in England and America, a protein-rich diet is one of the most basic factors that reduces the risk of developing dementia. Experts recommend that older people consume 1 to 1.5 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day. Good sources of protein include beans, legumes, fish, eggs and lean meat.
It is recommended that individuals over the age of 65 do 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise (walking or cycling) or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity exercise (running or swimming) every week. They should also do muscle-strengthening exercises twice a week.
Treating long-term conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and arthritis is also important. Establishing strong social connections with friends, family or the community not only improves mental health but also keeps the mind active.
The risk of dementia increases, especially at age 65 and after. Aging can lead to damage and decline in brain cells. Dementia diseases become more common as we age. Individuals with a family history of dementia have a higher risk of developing dementia. Diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, in particular, may be linked to genetic factors. Genetic factors can cause dementia by causing certain proteins to accumulate in the brain.
High blood pressure (hypertension), diabetes (diabetes), high cholesterol and heart diseases can negatively affect brain health and increase the risk of developing dementia. These diseases can damage the cerebral vessels and, as a result, mental disorders can develop. Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can damage brain functionality and increase the risk of dementia. Smoking creates difficulty in carrying oxygen to brain cells, while alcohol disrupts the function of neurotransmitters.
Not exercising regularly can negatively affect brain health and increase the risk of dementia.
Obesity can cause deterioration in the brain’s cognitive functions and lead to dementia.
A lifestyle that does not engage the brain sufficiently can increase the risk of dementia. Mental activities such as regular reading, problem solving, and social interaction can protect brain health. Vitamin B12 deficiency can impair brain function and lead to dementia symptoms. A diet low in antioxidants and devoid of omega-3 fatty acids can endanger brain health.

There is no definitive cure for dementia yet, but there are some treatments that can slow the progression of the disease and relieve symptoms.
